Health Directive FAQs

  • A health directive is a document prepared to appoint a person/persons who will be called “proxies” to make decisions in relation to your medical treatment decisions on your behalf when you lack the ability to make them.

  • When you are no longer able to communicate your wishes, this allows the proxies to consent to medical treatments. You can place restrictions on your proxies or allow them unrestricted decision making.

  • In accordance with the Health Care Directive Act, medical treatment is “anything that is done for a therapeutic, preventative, palliative, diagnostic, cosmetic or other health related purpose and includes a course of treatment.”
